Resting within the Norfolk County of Massachusetts, the city of Needham was originally settled in 1680 and formally incorporated in 1711. Initially a part of Dedham Grant, Needham divided itself from Dedham, Massachusetts later to be named after the community of Needham Market in Suffolk, England. In accordance with the 2000 census, the cities population rested at 28,911.

Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering is located in Needham and was chartered in 1997. Speaking of the public school system, there are currently five elementary facilities (Broadmeadow, Mitchell, Hillside, Eliot and Newman) one central middle school (Pollard), and one high school (Needham High) that is currently under renovation.
